Caucasian Shepherd Dog

Proper traditional rustic working type CSD

Modern rebuilt type 'CSD' (Central Asian Ovcharka)

The Alans were an amalgamation of warrior / herdsmen tribes located in the grasslands north of the Caucuses. Today, the Alans are known as the Ossetians living in the Republic of Georgia. The White Kazbegi Dog, (above left; named for the Kazbegi region), used on cattle drives and other shepherd dogs of the area are no doubt direct ancestors of the Alaunt. The modern version Caucasian Shepherd Dog is known today as the Central Asian Ovcharka (CAO) or as the Caucasian Ovcharka (CO). 'Ovcharka' is a Russian word meaning 'shepherd' that has recently been applied to the modern variety. As can clearly be seen, the modern variety has undergone considerable changes, so much so that they are in-fact no longer the same breed at all, but a new breed in it's own right.
