WEB Strains
The breed name White English Bulldog is a generic term that describes an actual breed type that goes by a few other names such as Old English White. The terms WEB and OEW describe the dogs left over from the wars of Spain and England, and include, more or less, Alaunt type English, Spanish, French, and others to a much lesser degree, with combinations of such interbred in localized areas, being breeds within the breed. Some of these have remained isolated enough to remain their own distinct breed within the WEB, while others are simply strains within the WEB. Strains of WEB can be found in localized areas around the southeast and especially areas that were once Spanish Florida. In middle Georgia we find an old breed strain of WE known locally as the Carr WE. These localized areas varied in terrain and therefore the dogs varied in form. These WEB strains became breeds within the breed. The explanation of the reality of breeds within a breed should be further defined... "The hybridizing of strains within a breed brings results which are only in kind, even if not in degree, analogous to those which derive from the hybridization of breeds. Foxhounds are cited as an example to show that strains are breeds within breeds, because the strains of Foxhounds are kept more distinct and pure than are the various strains of most other breeds of dogs. The breeds have been established through inbreeding and continuous selection toward a definite end. All of the recognized and distinct varieties having been derived from the various wild varieties in continued selection for wanted attributes. Continued hybridization of varieties tend to bring about reversion to the mean of the race, and persistent intercrossing of distinct and unrelated breeds results in a race which approximates in it's type the wild races from which the domestic varieties have been derived." The New Art of Breeding Better Dogs Onstott As well as the CWE, there is the Brack type WEB, a strain established by a local cattle and swine farmer using the CWE as a foundation. Other strains so far discovered around the southeast include what is known as the Georgia Giant type WEB and a large Florida type WEB often referred to by older rural Floridians as 'White Mastiffs". We are certain that there are strains as yet undiscovered and we continue our search for regional localized strains of the WEB. To date, only the CWE is defined and registered as a separate and distinct breed within the WEB, reproducing true to their own type. see Revolution of Breeds click on image below for more info Any serious breeder of any breed of dogs should study the American Pit Bull Terrier to learn from. In this breed, the originators bred for the elusive trait of gameness, which has nothing to do with aggression or drive, but simply, that the dog never stops working. Gameness is the most advanced trait of domesticated canine breeding requiring extreme difficulty in maintaining. If a breeder is breeding for the quality of the protection dog to give its life for the livestock and family, the actual trait of gameness must exist, even if only proven in defense. This is well understood by those that have entered WEBs into APBT lines. In middle Georgia where old Spanish forts and missions exist on the frontier border of la Florida, we find the Carr WEB.
"Most
all WEBs in this area trace back to Mr. Jake Carr. Mr. Jake was an old
southern gentlemen that farmed along with his sons and grandsons. He
always kept a WEB in the truck with him as he rounded up the cows, took a
hog in the pen, or play with the babies to keep them from harms way. If
nothing else, the dogs kept valuable things from growing legs and walking
off. His dog of choice was a big headed WEB. He always said, 'the bigger
the head the more sense they had'. Well, after 60-70 years of breeding
dogs, you think he might know a thing or two about bulldogs. It should be noted, the origins of the WEB start with the Spanish explorers and settlers and were not brought or developed for the bull-bait, and as such are not really even bulldogs in the modern meaning of the word, yet strains of the Alaunt of the Butchers, used for defending and controlling rough livestock such as the original long horned cattle, and for defense of forts. see Dogs of War Moreover, the Carr WEB most closely resembles, (in type and temperament), the Alanos of Spain used with cattle in the countryside and registered with SEFCA. We have recently discovered a specific isolated strain of the Alabai known as the White Kazbegi Shepherd, which fit the phenotype and genotype of the CWE and the core alaunt of the steppes of Central Asia. see WEB vs. Alano The Carr White English are native to Hawkinsville, Georgia and generally only found in the middle Georgia region. Today, there are less than 100 known to remain.
