White English Bulldog

Proper traditional rustic working type WEBs

Modern rebuilt type 'WEBs'

"He was often used as a drover, moving animals to market or to slaughter house. On the farm, he protected the livestock from both human thieves and animal predators. He also doubled admirably as a guard dog for the home. Indeed, to this day, he can still be seen throughout rural Italy performing these old duties.
'In Italy, the breed is still very much a farm dog,' Mike Sottile says." The Celebration of Rare Breeds, Volume II

"There they serve as guards for the farm, and were used in gathering cattle and hogs, which ranged in the woods in a semi-wild state. These dogs were known at that time 'white english' in reference to their origin.
To this day the dog persists in it's purest state of usage in the more isolated enclaves of the rural south, where the mountaineers even today don't lock their doors or pen their pigs." Billy Hines ABR

Sadly, the function of the modern type 'WEB' has been altered from a working farm guardian into a sporting type dog bred for a variety of sporting events, including Schutzhund, hog catching competitions, the show ring, and even for dog fighting. This modification of it's function has led to a significant modification in it's form. As can clearly be seen, the modern variety has undergone considerable changes, so much so that they are in-fact no longer the same breed at all.
