The WEBPS is a private, non-competitive group, breeding non-competitive dogs. If competition, either in breeding or with dogs, is what your looking for, please feel free to look elsewhere. The White English Bulldog Preservation Society™© The Official Registry for the Carr White English "A Breed Apart"™ A private group dedicated to the preservation of the White English Proper. History from a farmer's perspective - Quite a few articles have been written about the White English Bulldog. The WEBPS site is not a duplication of existing articles, rather, it is the source. It is real history told from the viewpoint of southern farmers, the overseers of the breed from immemorial times. We intend to explain some of the processes that shaped the development of the breed, developments that may be unclear to people that had no part in the entire process. "Even today, dogs of this old type may be found here and there, some recognized as distinct breeds and others lost in the obscurity of unorthodoxy." The Book of the Dog "When I tell the truth, it is not for the sake of convincing those who do not know it, but for the sake of defending those that do." - William Blake
The White Kazbegi Shepherd Dog is found in an isolated region deep within the Caucus Mountains of Georgia, having been driven there from the vast grasslands of Central Asia by the Huns during the 4th century AD. The WEB was once a thriving breed among the southeastern United States. In the past 20-30 years, more people have recognized the amazing and unique attributes of the WEB and used them as foundation dogs for their own bloodlines. In doing so, they have developed completely new breeds such as the American Bulldog, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, Old Time Southern Bulldog, Plantation or Altamaha Bulldog, Altman White English, and the Old Southern White. Many of these performance bloodlines, such as the "Old Time Southern Bulldog" or the "Southern White" are very high performance dogs with an intense prey drive that is always "on", ideal for hog hunting and Schutzhand training. These performance lines derive from the WEB being crossed into other breeds, most for hunting purposes. The true WEB was and is a working farm dog, not a hunting dog. "So, the original war dog was turned into the essential brave hunting dog." Dr. Dieter Fleig A farm dog with an unwavering prey drive would be futile as the dogs would chase and kill livestock, defeating it's purpose as a guardian of the farm. A WEB can be used to hunt, but hunting dogs cannot be trusted to guard livestock. What makes the WEB so remarkable and indeed a breed apart is that they posses these hunting abilities but with the ability to turn this function on and off at their masters command and all with no training. It is an innate ability that sets them apart in a league of their own and why they have been so prized by rural southern farmers for so long. Our objective is simple and straight-forward. We are dedicated to the preservation of the WEB, specifically the Carr White English, a very old and hard to find strain found only in middle Georgia. It is our intention to save the rapidly disappearing CWE and it's remarkable rare temperament and physical abilities that make it such a wonderful breed and sets it far apart even from other WEB strains. The Carr White English and the Spanish Alano as registered by SEFCA are the only two known remnant populations of true ancient Alaunt type that exist worldwide and that still actively work cattle; the original function of the butcher's alaunt. It is the combination of this unique temperament, ability and traditional alaunt phenotype that we are preserving. The preservation of the Carr dogs IS NOT a rebuilding or recreation project, rather, a repopulation program utilizing the few remaining specimens. "It is easy to forget the shepherds' mastiffs of England until hearing of the prowess in one of the mastiff breeds like this. The shepherds' mastiffs were big, tough, drovers' dogs, able to protect the herd or flock on the driveways to urban markets or to pin wayward cattle in the market or for the butcher. The mastiff breeds are working dogs and must have a construction and temperament which permits this." Col. David Hancock "We also know that this breed," (shepherds' mastiff), "went out to... Spain, Mallorca, and Cuba between 1556 and 1649." Robert Jenkins and Ken Mollet The term White English Bulldog is a reference to these imports. When the English invaded the southeastern region of North America in 1733, they were faced with Alaunts of the older type working cattle and protecting Spanish forts and missions. Hence, they referred to these old type dogs as White English or Old English Whites, referring to their own old type Shepherds' Mastiff of England. The dogs imported by the Spanish settlers were different in function than those brought by the Conquistadores. The Spanish settlers brought Alanos, English Alaunts, and even some French and Italian Alaunts which were strains of the same breed, i.e. the Alaunt. White English Bulldogs, aka Old English Whites, specifically the Carr dogs, are still employed by cattlemen today, as are SEFCA Alanos.
