"Functional
type can survive non-pedigree breeding for centuries to emerge as a distinct
type which breeds true." The Mastiffs -
The Big Game Hunters
It has been an
enormous joy to found your Society and to share information with Mrs. Wilkins.
We breed Spanish alano from 80´s, and we are inheriting of the cattle dealers
from north of Spain, from many, many years old.
Most valuable characteristic of our race is its character, and I know that we
share many things: our dogs live with all the family, play with children, and
respect all the animals, other dogs included, but don't like strangers, and when
they work with cows or wild pigs, or others, they don't want to kill, they only
hold, but without violence, only by the ears or the nose, and when the action
has finished, you can move the bull, for example, to the truck, and our alano
will walk alongside, with attention but calmly: this is a real working dog,
brave and just, always on alert, but only when it is needed to him. I think you
and I are looking for the same type, but always with character like most important
point: they are working dogs, in Spain young breeders are breeding for
show dogs, and this offends me, and another point difficult to explain in English
to me: old look, atavism, rusticity (I don't know if these words exist in English...)
The last two dogs in your photos, branding and with together in the cag: it's
amazing, Heather I think that we are breeding the same race.
It is necessary to say that, since we can see at our alano in the official
shows, many new breeders have began to select only by their aspect, and this is
not the spirit of one of the oldest dog in the world, we must continue looking
for the character of the old alanos: balanced, functional and worthy to
stay in the time.
Excuse for my English and good luck to the people of the WEBPS and my gratefulness
to Mrs. Wilkins. I invite to you to visit my
website www.corrican.com where
maybe, you can found small surprise.
Best regards from Madrid,
Joaquín Cárdenas
Alanos españoles del Corrican

The two
dogs in the middle are not WEBs. They are two modern Spanish Alanos living in
Spain. On the left is an Alano from 1923; on the right is
Brack's Trina, a middle Georgia WEB. Compare the type, not the markings.
